Bhakti-yoga
is
the state of union with the divine (samadhi) achieved through an intense
and sustained attitude of devotion, directed to a divine incarnation or
some symbol of the divine...
|
...This
intense devotion engages the entire personality, and leads to one-pointed
concentration and the stilling of the mind. Such stilling of the mind is
called samadhi and is yoga. ("Yoga is
the stilling of the mind." Yoga Sutras, 1.2)
Bhakti is also an attitude or approach to the divinity; or, an attitude and approach to religion and spirituality. Thus: "He tends toward bhakti." One who tends toward bhakti, with an emotional and devotional attitude toward the divinity, can be called a "bhakta." Bhakti is not a rational or cool approach to the Ultimate, but an emotive love approach. All religious aspirants possess some capacity for devotion. The attitude of bhakti is a significant factor in initiation (shaktipat), and in the fruitfulness of meditation techniques (dharana). SACRED
